We knew it all along.


As people who spend a lot of time online, we’re all well-acquainted with the fact that social media isn;t real life. For everyday people, social media serves as a sort of best-of album documenting some of your most fun experiences. So while it looks like your buddies go on endless vacations, they’re probably just working a lot and only taking pictures when they get time off (or, if they have rich parents, they really are going on endless vacations).


For influencers, social media is an advertising platform. As a result, we shouldn’t be too shocked when they admit that they weren’t being totally truthful on their platforms.


And yet, here we are. After a bunch of people responding to TikTok’s then-upcoming ban by getting racist, other influencers took to the platform to say that their videos were, in fact, fake, or that they had misled viewers about their content.


For example, a creator known for clever coffee drinks? She wasn’t even a coffee drinker when she started doing it. A user who makes fun ice cubes? They don’t even drink water with ice in it. Someone who goes hunting for Squishmallows? He just orders them online. Is nothing sacred?!


Here are some examples from people who didn’t quick-delete their videos, but now that the app is back, it’s going to be either very funny or very awkward to see them continue their TikTok careers.
