In recent years, two special kinds of people have become obsessed with the idea of human trafficking. The first is TikTok idiots, who believe that everything from a flyer being placed on your car to someone calling you from a private number is a sign that you’re about to be kidnapped and sent to a Siberian brothel.
The second group is what we’ll call the “Save the Children” folks. These people saw the statistic that, globally, 27 million people are trafficked every year and internalized that 1) all of these people are children; 2) all of these people are in the United States; and 3) it’s their duty to protect them.
Both of these groups have been pretty bad for the people *actually* trying to stop human trafficking, as helplines have been flooded with reports ranging from “I found a hair tie I don’t recognize, are they coming to get me?” to “I saw a child with brown hair while his mom had blonde hair; I have rescued the child, he’s in my van, let me know where I should drop him off.”
The point is, most of these accusations are misfires. Speaking of misfired accusations, this woman here claims that this couple’s child is being trafficked. Her evidence, it seems, is, well, nothing.
