When the oil and gas drilling business required the life cycle of the drill to be dramatically improved due fact they were going deeper and deeper for oil, the design change from a standard bronze or even a higher performing Copper Beryllium Alloy would not give them the length and time needed so a need for a much more lubricious alloy was desired.
