Nature is truly f***ing bizarre sometimes. There are so many things that make you wonder why the hell it would exist, and you can easily see how something like this might've made our ancient ancestors believe in monsters.

The octopus stinkhorn mushroom looks like it came straight outta hell. It's also distributed worldwide. -

The black goop, called gleba, is a mass of spores that gives off a corpse-like stench. The stench attracts insects and flies who eat the goop, which sticks to the insects and are subsequently dispersed by them. -

The fruiting body resembles the tentacles of an octopus. -
