Ellen’s New Standup Special Is Genuinely Unhinged
The “I was canceled” playbook is now pretty well-set. While in previous years, a social media cancellation campaign could genuinely spell the death of your career, now, you can do pretty egregious things and still maintain a decent-sized fanbase.
Of course, this is both good and bad, as people who were canceled over B.S. are slowly being let back into polite society. However, there were also those who were genuinely criticized for bad behavior, proclaimed they were being canceled, then started annoyingly talking about how “society isn’t ready for them.” Also, some of them just still haven’t realized they aren’t funny anymore — sorry, Jerry!
Ellen falls distinctly in the last two camps. Starting as an admittedly pretty great stand-up comedian, her comedy instincts have withered away in recent years. Oh yeah, she was also accused of being terrible to everyone she met. See, you can’t do that and tell people to “be kind” — it kinda rubs them the wrong way, you feel me?
Well, in response to all of this, she decided to release her final stand-up special. The trailer alone is a sight to behold, but the clips people have been posting show that she really learned nothing from her controversy. Starting your show with a montage of all the people who said you suck? Proclaiming “I am a woman” and getting a several minute long standing ovation — and leaving that in your special?
If there was anyone around her who could still tell her “no,” I think they would have advised her against putting this out. However, anyone who had that role is likely suffering from third-degree coffee burns on their face, so I guess the Ellen we have now is the Ellen we’re going to have forever.
