Remembering Mexico’s 'Emo vs. Punk' Brawl
It was teens with dyed hair and black skinny jeans versus other teens with dyed hair and black skinny jeans.
Back in 2008, tensions between two of Mexico’s subcultures boiled over. Punks, proud of their gritty legacy, went head-to-head against emos, whose rising popularity (and allegedly “copied” style) was really starting to bother the punk crowd.
While originally started as simple complaints on Myspace, it soon became a real, in-person fight, with both sides going after each other in the streets. Allegedly, things got so bad that around a hundred police officers were called to the scene — and even they were unable to stop the fighting.
But where the cops failed, the Hare Krishnas succeeded, with followers managing to convince the two groups to knock it off.
